We have an intermittent crackerling on our home phone line. When Telstra finally got around to calling us the crackerling had gone away, so when they did a line test is was OK.

It has started up again an makes audio conversation very difficult. We are with Eftel and I need to know who to contact and where they test up to e.g. Do they disown the wiring inside the house and why? As far as I am concerned the telephone system is from my handset to the handset I am connected to.

I find dealing with telcos very frustrating and often don't get any customer satisfaction at all when contacting them .

Four months down the road and still have the excessive static and noise on the line. The Dialup has frequent dropouts and disconnects.

I did an isolation test and connected a brand new cordless phone directly to the Network Interface (SNI) and then wrang the service provider (Eftel) to log the fault and tested the line directly talking to their support operator. The isolation test removed all lines and devices in the property, completely.

I got the conversation (and noise) recorded by Eftel, but still Telstra are saying the line is fine. But they do not go under my house back to the SNI box like I did. Only sit in the telecom junction box in the street.

Are they professionl telecoms engineers , do they know what they are doing????

All I am cautious of is being hit with the $129 \"incorrect call out fee\" which I'm sure Telstra are trying to pull off. But I have confidence in my Isolation test.

Yep its a rock and a hard place position. If the crackling is driving you mad I would go for the call out and see what the problem is.

One thing thou... try a corded phone instead of the cordless (even thou its new) just in case thats the cause as it could be local interferance.

Finally a telco who tested right up to the SNI box. Yep its fixed and the problem was in the Telstra side of the system.

Its big case of told you so.

Can I charge Telstra for my fault finding fee, they would not have fixed it if I hadn't narrowed ithe fault down to being in their system.

Hi, I have a similar problem to the one you had. We have crackling on the line, can only call out, can't receive calls, but broadband is still working.
we got telstra to test the line and was told it was fine. I noticed you plugged your phone directly into the SNI. I am unfimiliar with all this. Could you please let me know wat an SNI is and how I would do the same test myself or do you need to get a phone company to do that? any help would be much appreciated. thank you. Mark

The SNI is simply the last point where the phone line is part of the Telstra network and then becomes "internal to your property"

For me it meant going under the house and disconnecting the houes at the SNI from the Telstra phone line. I then connected a phone directly onto the incoming phone line. I then rang the fault help line and made them record the crackling and stated that I was disconnected from the internal property wiring.

Eventually a Telstra contractor came out. He really knew his stuff and went to the SNI under the house a said straight away it was on the incoming line. He found a burnt connection at the junction box up the road.

Sometimes it is water in a junction box or insects (ants living in the junction box).

I used a cordless phone so I didn't have to sit under the house while making the call, it cost about $20

Good luck.
