Hi All. I am wanting to set up VOIP. I currently have ADSL 128/64. Will I need to upgrade it, and to what speed?

Are VOIP calls counted in your download/upload quota?

I need to keep a landline. Who/What is the cheapest option?

I would appreciate any advice/help.
Cheers

HI,

You will need as a minimum 512/256 to get good VoIp quality and yes they are included in your useage quota but how much traffic each call uses depends on many variables,

I've configured VOIP on 256k ADSL connections & they invariably work fine, providing the service isn't used for anything else at the time a VOIP call is in progress. Since the services in question belong to relatively light internet users anyway it hasn't been an issue, however I would question a use of low speed ADSL connection with VOIP in many situations. You certainly can't browse & yabber away at the same time as the voice quality degrades substantially.

I can only say that all of the people looking to use voip should do as I have done. Get a Pennytel sim, add a Pennytel voip account and make all of your calls through your mobile at the same rate as you do using the Pennytel voip system,. The Pennytel sim is somehow connected to your voip account and when you use the smart dial service the call initially to the smart dial numbers is free and then it is directed to a landile for 8 cents untimed or to an Australian mobile for 10.5 cents per minute timed per second. It cant get any better that that. If you look at the web site (www.pennytel.com.au) you will see that it also includes International call to over seventy countries and PT sim to any PT sim is always free.

Go with PT by all means if you want a VOIP system that maybe possibly if you are very lucky will work occasionally, and if you are 200% confident you will NEVER need any support. I simply don't have the time, patience or inclination to tolerate totally ignorant monkeys, which is why I only do business with professionally run companies that have half at least a clue about customer service. A professional quality VOIP service doesn't need fallback as it will be singnificantly more reliable than anything offered by Tel$tra or Optu$. PT does NOT fit any of those criteria by a long shot.

dougy, It may interest you to know that I have used Pennytel for a couple of years and have found it to be reliable in every way. I do agree about the support though. I do know that Penntel staff are trying to rectify the problems with the support system. I am currently using Pennytel sim and it is fantastic. I dont need Pennytel support as it is fine once it is set up. I amke all of my calls through my mobile at th low Pennytel rates and it is grerat.

Hi There

To keep a landline you will be up for the telstra line rental charge no matter where you get the landline from, Telstra have some cheaper plans that you may be able to purchase for example if you can qualify as a low income user there is a $21 per month option available.

The call rates are still quite high so if you have broadband I would still suggest you consider a VoIP server for cheaper local / National and International calls.

One should always go for cheaper rates or plans but it should be cost effective and very effective, it should not be like you are just got it in affordable plan and then you have too pay some more that is hidden so, it is very important for you to better understand the plan first before opting.

Thanks
